discovered in the Transvaal region of South Africa, was the first of the Australopithecines to be described. There are two specimens of noteworthy importance: the Taung child, discovered by Raymond Dart in 1925, and STS 5 or "Mrs. Ples", discovered by Robert Broom in 1947. This species was originally classified as Plesianthropus transvaalensis. |
