Description : Homo habilis was first described in 1960 in the Olduvai Gorge, Tanzania. Homo habilis is the widely accepted as the direct predecessor to H. ergaster/erectus. This species name means "Handyman", referring to the early belief that H. habilis was the first tool maker. Notable specimens attributed to this species are KNM-ER 1813 and OH 24.
